Sainte-Famille

Sainte-Famille, the second oldest parish on the island, was founded in 1661. Its rich soil has made Sainte-Famille an almost exclusively farming community. The houses line the country road in the characteristic Quebecois style; its orchards in bloom and the magnificent view over the Laurentians are a moving sight.

The heart of the village houses two listed buildings belonging to the church - the procession chapel and the church which dates back to 1743. The church is unique because of its three working steeples, the niches in the wall with the statues of the Holy Family, and its wealth of art works.

Located next to the church in the old presbytery is the Maison de nos aïeux (home of our ancestors), a genealogy centre about the families who originally settled on the island, and an inviting theme based park where you can enjoy a picnic or a simple stroll.

Sainte-Famille, like Saint-François has a large selection of houses dating back to the French regime. These houses have stood the test of time and illustrate the courage and tenacity of the original settlers. Today's islanders are passionately proud of their three-hundred-year-old heritage.
